Discussion:
DFS looses Links

Hi,

I'm encountering a strange problem:

I've got a Windows 2000 Sub Domain in which I've created a DFS Root with
several links to different servers (no replication).
The DFS root is hosted on a W2k Member server, as are some of the links.
From time to time the DFS root looses some of the links, that is they
are not shown in the dfsgui MMC anymore and are not accessible from
clients. It's always the same links, namely these whose shares are
located on other servers than the server who hosts the DFS-root.

How can this happen? I don't know anything about saving a "DFS
Configuration" permantently.

Thanks for any hints,
Reinhard

Hey,

You could replicate the DFS root to one of the other servers hosting shares.
If both servers hold a copy of the DFS root it seems unlikely that you would
lose information.

It appears strange however that you lose the information. I do not know what
could be causing this except maybe repeated networkproblems between the
servers or DNS problems.
The servers hosting the shares are all member of the same domain?

Grtz,

Merijn

Well this came to my mind, but what if it's not only 2 servers holding
DFS Links? replicating the DFS root can't be the solution...

The 3 servers in question are all in the same domain and I can't see any
DNS problems (dcdiag, netdiag and event log seem fine).
The DFS root is held on a w2k member server and is active directory
integrated, I just can't see why this could be a issue of network
problems, isn't the DFS link a simple referral ("pointer") to another
share on another server?

Has this issue been solved or is it still causing problems?

It's still causing problems as I had to realize after a reboot of one of
the member servers that is hosting one of the shares.
No ideas so far why this is happening.
